A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy App

Jitters uses exposure therapy exercises to help retrain the fight or flight response in those who suffer from anxiety, panic attacks and specific phobias. Users are able to increase the intensity and durations of their exposures and track their progress over time.

From Panic

From Panic

Many people suffer from panic attacks and phobias including one of our founders, Alex Wasner. Jitters was made after he sought a scientific approach to overcome his specific phobia. After reading many studies and discussing his phobia with various mental health professionals, he began using cognitive behavioral therapy exposure exercises by looking up his phobia on google images and tracking his progress in a spreadsheet.

He realized this was not the most efficient way to expose himself to the content as the intensity of the exposures varied greatly and maintaining a spreadsheet was cumbersome. Over a weekend, he decided to build an initial prototype to combine his spreadsheet and exposure content in a single React Native app. By using the app multiple times a day, he began to notice exactly what the scientific studies suggested – consistent exposures to his phobia was helping.

What Now?

What Now?

After using the app for 3 months, Alex went from not being able to talk out loud about his phobia, to being able to watch intense videos. This was a clear indicator to us that we needed to build this out further to reach more people who similarly suffer from phobias and panic attacks. We created a backend on Firebase, completely re-designed the app with fun animations and added new phobias and exercises based on suggestions from mental health professionals.
